Mount Etna:  the Top and the Flanks
Mount Etna is the largest volcano in Europe, with an altitude of 3350 m ASL. This is not a dormant
volcano: short eruptions are frequent, and pressure is constantly eased by spewing smoke and ashes from
the central crater. There are two ski resorts on the south and on the north flanks: in Spring or Autumn
you can often ski there and then reach the Ionian Sea and swim in the same day! Excursions to the top
generally depart from the south flank ski resort (Rifugio Sapienza), which can be reached by car through
scenic roads climbing on the flanks and going through charming little villages, rich in history and
traditions. Many town festivals and little markets are held in these villages all year round on Sundays
