A short bio of Luca Schillaci, your Guide in the East of Sicily
Luca Schillaci was born and brought up in Catania. As a child, he used to spend his summer holidays visiting
historic towns and museums across Italy with parents: children hate this, he loved it. Call it predestination.
After school, he moved to Bologna to study History of Art, then to Trieste, where he took a degree in
Translation and Interpreting, and then he moved back to Catania where he attended a one year vocational
training course about the development of cultural and historical tourism in the east of Sicily. His licence as a
tour guide was issued by the regional government of Tuscany. This licence is valid nationwide.
Most Sicilians study at home and then flee to qualified jobs in the north or abroad: Luca did the other way
round, as he often does, and created his own qualified job in Sicily from scratch. Setting up a business project
and working on a freelance basis is incredibly hard in Sicily, but few other places in the world are worth this
effort. Few other places in the world have so many beautiful stories to tell as this one. Go and see yourself!
"This is much more than just my job: this is my karma!"
"Sicily embodies the essence of civilization: every single stone is history and each one has a story worth telling. Then each stone is also beautiful:
this is generally the one and only feature which is immediately before your eyes. What I try to do is to introduce the human element and to help you
read other levels of meaning: who shaped things like this and why? How was life like when this was done? What is the place of this special thing in the
general framework? How does this relate to us? Basically, what I try to do is to turn beautiful stones into warm and even more beautiful feelings"
